12 South -- Leominster Close up of the old shield attached to a lamppost downtown. I believe this to be the oldest shield I have seen posted on a Massachusetts highway. The block numerals suggest that the sign is probably from the 1940s or earlier. Note that the digits are individual plates attached to the sign. The reflective buttons on the "1" are all still in tact, while the some of the buttons on the "2" have dislodged. Because all of the paint is gone, it is difficult to tell if the digits were white on black plates, or whether the digits were black and the plates and the shield itself were white. August 5, 2006. |
